Efficiently achieving accuracy with weights

At SEQH, we are always looking to perform in the most efficient and smart way. Why? For obvious reasons – achieve more and improve the overall margin of the job!

Within this blog I’d like to focus the attention specifically on ‘WEIGHTS’ within our Log Export Packing yard.

Not hitting the right target weights can result in having to unpack or pack more logs into the container which is time consuming. This reduces the efficiency of the operation and increases the working costs.

Our process to try and mitigate the need for additional handling is as it follows:

  1. Grab operator loads the cradle with logs;
  2. Forklift operator lifts the cradle and checks the gross weight (scales fitted into our forklifts);
  3. If the gross weight is under or over the required weight, the cradle is placed down and adjusted accordingly.
* Above image: Lancewood (mixed length timber) sitting inside a cradle. Cradle tare is 1,700kg.
* Above image: example of set length Taeda Pine. Each cradle weighs approx. 28,000kg + the tare of the cradle (approx. 1,200kg)

As we take these measures even before packing logs into a container, our success rate is very high which means we have been able to increase the daily packing volume and therefore get better utilization of our equipment, land and allocated labour to this area of the business.

If you would like to learn more about our Log Export Packing division or any other area of South East Queensland Hauliers, visit our website or contact me further.
