Moranbah Solar Farm [FCL Road Train]

South East Queensland Hauliers are currently delivering containers to Moranbah for the Rugby Run Solar Farm which is being developed by Adani.

SEQH collect the containers via A-Doubles from the Port of Brisbane terminals and transport them via our hub yard for a Rural Tailgate inspection and then to our Toowoomba depot. From there, we used standard road trains to deliver into the project site. SEQH have delivered close to 240 containers so far with a similar number left to go. With varying shipment sizes, there have been weeks where we have delivered up to 50 shipping containers into the project inside a week.

The first phase of the project is 65 megawatts however in total, the Rugby Run solar farm will be a 200 mega watt farm. You can learn more about the solar farm specifically by visiting this link.

South East Queensland Hauliers have completed 10+ solar farms. We have a proven system to handle a large volume of containers coming in, through quarantine and out to the customer. Additionally we have proven our strength and ability in returning the empty containers swiftly once empty to avoid detention charges.

Efficiently achieving accuracy with weights

At SEQH, we are always looking to perform in the most efficient and smart way. Why? For obvious reasons – achieve more and improve the overall margin of the job!

Within this blog I’d like to focus the attention specifically on ‘WEIGHTS’ within our Log Export Packing yard.

Not hitting the right target weights can result in having to unpack or pack more logs into the container which is time consuming. This reduces the efficiency of the operation and increases the working costs.

Our process to try and mitigate the need for additional handling is as it follows:

  1. Grab operator loads the cradle with logs;
  2. Forklift operator lifts the cradle and checks the gross weight (scales fitted into our forklifts);
  3. If the gross weight is under or over the required weight, the cradle is placed down and adjusted accordingly.
* Above image: Lancewood (mixed length timber) sitting inside a cradle. Cradle tare is 1,700kg.
* Above image: example of set length Taeda Pine. Each cradle weighs approx. 28,000kg + the tare of the cradle (approx. 1,200kg)

As we take these measures even before packing logs into a container, our success rate is very high which means we have been able to increase the daily packing volume and therefore get better utilization of our equipment, land and allocated labour to this area of the business.

If you would like to learn more about our Log Export Packing division or any other area of South East Queensland Hauliers, visit our website or contact me further.

Log Packing, Fumigating & Exporting

In the first quarter of 2017, we acquired our export license at South East Qld. Hauliers. Since then, we’ve continued to grow our export logging facility which involves the following:

  1. Receive in log trucks and run them over the public weighbridge onsite;
  2. Onsite Authorised Officer inspects the containers and the logs prior to packing;
  3. Upon the success of the inspection, we then commence packing logs into the containers;
  4. Containers are weighed and then placed under fumigation;
  5. Once the fumigation has passed, the containers are transported to the Port of Brisbane to be exported overseas.

At this present time, we have the equipment, land space and procedures set up which enables us the capacity to pack up to 60 containers per day.

Should you have any further questions or enquiries about utilising our services, please contact me.

The birth of the Single Axle A-Double – pioneered by SEQH & Haulmark Trailers

The birth of the Single Axle A-Double

In the early 2000’s, SEQH partnered with Haulmark Trailers to pioneer the industry by creating the A-Double road train. The A-Double has a gross capacity of 85 tonne and spans 29.95m in length. This unit has the ability to cart 2 x loaded 40ft/20ft containers or 4 x empty 20ft containers which makes light work of a large volume of containers.

Our business (which has been created by design) is headquartered in Hemmant which is 10mins from the Port of Brisbane terminals. We are positioned ‘off-island’ so we own our own land and use the A-Doubles to cart import and export containers between the port and our depot. In 2011 we strategically set up a depot in Toowoomba and use our A-Doubles to run between the depots which yet again, makes light work of a large volume of containers.

In 2017, innovation has happened again! Working with Haulmark Trailers, Brett (MD) and Owen (GM) have once again pioneered the industry by developing these PBS approved single axle A-Doubles which will cart empties – 2 x 40ft containers or 4 x 20ft containers.

SEQH delivers pipe for revolutionary waste solution

SEQH delivers pipe for revolutionary waste solution

An ongoing job for SEQH has been the delivery of special pipe that will act as a runway for an underground waste solution to the Maroochydore CBD area (Sunshine Coast).

“Rather than using wheelie bins, waste will be transported from commercial buildings and apartments at up to 70kmh through a 6.5km system of underground vacuum pipes located beneath Australia’s newest city centre.”

Our involvement in this project includes the following steps:

  • Collect the 40ft containers from the Port of Brisbane wharf;
  • Unpack the 40ft containers of pipe sitting in crates & de-hire the shipping container;
  • Deliver the pipe in crates to Maroochydore upon request.

The way this pipe has been packaged is certainly worth a special mention. The pipe has been packaged together on a timber skid with chocks between each row and restrained altogether. This has saved a lot of time and money as it is not required to handle the pipe individually and pipe bollards on the truck was not required. As an example, the above load was a two lift operation for the 40+ pipe on board. Not only did it save time and money on this occasion but also when the container was packed and then unpacked.

Should you have any further questions about this project or any others, please contact me to discuss further.

Switchboard blows at Gasworks, Newstead

Friday PM Swift Response to Power Outage

On Friday the 10th I received a phone call after the switchboard at Gasworks, Newstead blew resulting in a messy situation for the complex. Gasworks is home to numerous restaurants, grocery stores, retail shops, a seafood store and medical centre as well as various commercial offices.

SEQH were called for support to deliver a 20ft size generator weighing 22.5 tonne – within 30 minutes of the go-ahead, we had a side loader onsite at Larapinta to collect the generator.

Whilst at the time on Friday it wasn’t clear what caused this to take place, the heat that Brisbane has experienced hadn’t helped as the electrical cables had melted after over-heating. This will take 10-14 days to fix.

* The entrance/exit to the car park was the proposed drop zone for the 22.5 tonne generator.
* Numerous smaller generators were previously delivered to assist.
* Here’s our driver Greg off-loading the 22.5 tonne generator. We weren’t able to go any further due to the combined weight of the prime mover, trailer & generator being too much for the ground. Following this delivery a franna crane will shift the generator into their required position.

Should you have any further questions, please contact me further.

Imports for the Millmerran Power Station

We recently completed deliveries to the Millmerran Power Station after collecting these imported units from the Port of Brisbane.

Typically we’d run a job like this using our road trains which allows us a greater capacity to complete the transport legs (moving 2 units per road train) and more flexibility with timing. The moment things are OOG (out of gauge), the plan changes!

  1. Over-width (3.32m total) which means you cannot use multi-combinational vehicles – single trailers only.
  2. Now that you can’t use road trains (which are rated to carry heavier masses by having the dolly + mass management), you run the risk of being overweight on your gross and axle weights.
  3. OOG then means you have curfew hours where you cannot transport freight between certain time brackets.

On top of the above 3 points, our customer imported 16 of these OOG crates at once however only had 8 days free on the hire of the flat racks. This means, if the job was not completed and the flat racks weren’t de-hired within the 8 days free, the shipping line will be whacking the client with further hire detention charges each day thereafter.

For the above now, 4 points, the decision was made to do the following:

  • Collect all units from the wharf within the 3 free days.
  • Unpack the units.
  • De-hire all of the flat racks within the detention free period.
  • Deliver the crates to site (approx. 240km from the Port) when required and outside curfew times.
* Lifting the 23/24 tonne units off the 40ft flat racks via our onsite crane.

The reason the above avenue was chosen to be followed was to eliminate the risk of further costs. For example, all it would take is for one of more of the flat racks to fail a rural tailgate inspection and the freight will not be able to move until further action (in most cases a quarantine wash) is taken. Then the flat rack + units have to be re-inspected and passed by quarantine officers.

At South East Qld. Hauliers, we do more than just throw pricing at a job or accept what falls on our lap. We look across the entire job and the big picture to add value, work efficient and where possible save costs and/or minimise the risk of additional charges within the project.
